She didn’t leave me.

Moira did not leave me, even though it means her certain death.

I would never want her to leave me. I would never want to be without her. But I wanted to keep her safe.

And as strong as I am, the dark elves overpower us. Their numbers are greater than the two of us.

That was what I thought. But I am realizing that Moira might be a more talented huntress than she ever realized.

The wound in my side stabs and burns with pain. The elves think they have weakened me, and the truth is they have.

But I will kill all of them. With Moira’s help. Because of Moira.

Because not one of them will touch her. No one will hurt her. Never again.

An elf is cornering her now, holding a sword to her throat. I cannot stop the growl that comes from deep inside my chest.

It is filled with rage and hatred at the wanton violence of the dark elves.

There was a moment where I was convinced I would die at the hands of the elves. And in that moment, I was simply glad that I had told her to hide.

Now I am glad that she didn’t listen. Even if her life is in danger.

Because now I have found the strength to fight again.

My claws against the ground of the forest floor are deafening. The sound sends masses of pavobirds and karusobirds flying from the trees.

The sky darkens above us as they leave the woods in droves. Their frenzied screeching creates a din that sounds like something created by dark magic.

Several dark elves have died in Moira’s traps. I have killed one.

Two lives, though one is bleeding out in a snare. The other one has his sword to her throat.

I make it to Moira’s side in seconds and pull the dark elf away from her by its throat.

I kill the elf easily, closing my claw around its throat and ripping, twisting.

Blood spurts from between my fingers as I feel the elf die in my claws.

Two more dark elves must have been hiding in the undergrowth, because they come out of nowhere.

The birds are still keen and shriek above us. There must be thousands of birds, and they can still sense the fight beneath them.

Moira shrieks as one of the elves grabs her up. I roar, and the birds respond. They shriek and scream, and the air vibrates with their anxiety.

Rach, in that moment, sounds as though it is collapsing in on itself.

I am sure that we aren’t the only sentient beings in the forest. Is no one else around?

Beings who might wonder what in the gods is happening around them?

I head for Moira and something takes over in me. Something beyond what can be called a monster.

Something dark and feral. I haven’t been this way in a long time.

I have not gone berserk in a long time.

But the elf is threatening Moira. The dark elf sees me coming, drops her heavily on the ground. Then it swipes at me with a sharp sword.
